TROVE 1st subsurface video of Ken Glennie Weekend (May 2026)
Video Caption (Mike Cooper):
“In May 2026 there was a gathering of family, friends and former colleagues at Lossiemouth, Moray, Scotland to commemorate the life of Ken Glennie, one of the "fathers of North Sea geology", who passed away in 2019. There was a gathering of ~50 geoscientists - many expert in the Upper Permian Hopeman Sandstone - an analogue for the primary gas reservoir of the Southern North Sea (the "Rotliegendes Formation" or Leman sandstone). The weekend was organised by the Aberdeen Geological Society (AGS), Aberdeen University personnel & sponsored and supported by Shell/Adura. This was a collection of some of the leading experts on the Hopeman Sandstone. This video is intended as a record and introduction to these Inner Moray Firth outcrops. It was not planned to be recorded, but evolved as the weekend progressed. Pages from the field guide are included, so pause the video to read these. Please add comments below (yes I know the sound quality is not the best, but we tried background noise reduction. We didn't "mic up" speakers - so when presenters turned to point out geological features, the sound drops to inaudible. Also pebbles do make a lot of noise when people walk around!! LOL) Perhaps any viewer interested in visiting the outcrops should contact AGS in the first instance (via their website). If there is sufficient interest, a field trip could be organised - with a few months notice - to show the amazing rock outcrop features shown in this video. Please recommend this video to friends, colleagues and students. Bizarrely All errors & omissions are mine. Enjoy! Mike Cooper.”
